A major fire broke out at a church in Bushwick, Brooklyn on Friday afternoon, prompting a large-scale emergency response as flames rapidly spread through the building and sent thick smoke into the air.
According to the FDNY, the first emergency call came in at approximately 1:22 p.m., reporting heavy fire conditions at the South Bushwick Church located near Himrod Street. The situation escalated quickly from a first alarm response to a second alarm and then a third alarm as firefighters recognized the severity of the blaze and called in additional resources.
Video from the scene shows dense smoke pouring from the structure, with bright orange flames visible shooting from the church’s steeple. The intensity of the fire has made it one of the more significant active incidents in the area, drawing a substantial response from multiple fire units.
Officials confirmed that approximately 63 units are currently operating at the scene, involving more than 100 firefighters and emergency personnel. Crews are actively engaged in fire suppression efforts, working to contain the blaze, prevent further structural damage, and stop the fire from spreading to nearby buildings in the surrounding neighborhood.
Firefighters are utilizing ladder trucks and hose lines to attack the fire from different angles while additional teams manage safety operations and secure the perimeter. Streets in the immediate area have been closed to traffic to allow emergency crews to work safely and efficiently.

New York City Councilmember Jen Gutiérrez stated that her office is monitoring the situation closely and coordinating with emergency services. Residents have been advised to avoid the area, follow detour instructions, and expect ongoing street closures while firefighting operations continue.
