A fast-moving brush fire sparked by a vehicle blaze caused concern Thursday afternoon in Fallbrook, burning nearly 10 acres and triggering temporary evacuations near Interstate 15 in northern San Diego County.
According to fire officials, the incident—now referred to as the Mission 2 Fire—began shortly after 1:00 p.m. along I-15 northbound near Mission Road. What started as a vehicle fire quickly spread to nearby dry vegetation on a hillside, rapidly growing to approximately 9.9 acres.
Fire crews from CAL FIRE responded swiftly, working aggressively to contain the flames. By approximately 2:30 p.m., firefighters successfully stopped the forward progress of the fire, preventing further spread and potential structural damage.
Despite containment, crews remained on scene to strengthen control lines and address lingering hot spots and hazards. Their efforts were crucial in stabilizing the situation and ensuring the fire did not reignite or expand.
The blaze significantly impacted traffic in the area. The California Highway Patrol temporarily shut down two lanes of Interstate 15 as well as the Mission Road off-ramp to allow emergency responders safe access to the scene. A Sig Alert was issued during peak response time but was lifted by approximately 3:30 p.m., with all freeway lanes eventually reopened.
However, as of 4:00 p.m., local roads including Sterling View Drive and Old Highway 395 remained closed as crews continued to access and manage the burn area.
The charred hillside, visible from the freeway, serves as a stark reminder of how quickly fires can spread under the right conditions. While no injuries or structural losses have been reported, the incident underscores ongoing wildfire risks across Southern California, especially during dry and windy conditions.
