A chaotic incident unfolded in Times Square on Thursday afternoon after a dispute escalated into violence, prompting a major police response in one of the city’s busiest tourist districts.
According to the New York City Police Department, the incident began just after 3:30 p.m. near Broadway between West 44th and 45th Streets, when a large group dispute broke out in the area. During the confrontation, a 26-year-old man was reportedly slashed in the neck and transported to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to recover.
Shortly after the initial altercation, police say a 17-year-old male opened fire toward the same group. Despite the discharge of multiple rounds in a heavily populated area, no individuals were struck by gunfire. Authorities confirmed that while the situation was extremely dangerous, there were no shooting-related injuries reported.
The teenager was taken into custody at the scene. As of the latest update, formal charges have not yet been filed while investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Police activity was concentrated around West 45th Street and Eighth Avenue, where dozens of officers responded and secured the area.
Investigators were also seen examining a blue Hyundai believed to be connected to the incident. The vehicle is part of ongoing efforts to determine the sequence of events and identify additional individuals involved in the confrontation.
The NYPD has stated that additional persons of interest are being sought for questioning as part of the continuing investigation. Authorities are working to piece together how the dispute escalated so quickly from a verbal altercation into both a stabbing and a shooting.
The incident caused significant disruption in the area, with traffic delays, road closures, and temporary impacts to public transportation reported near central Manhattan. Given the location in one of the world’s most heavily visited tourist zones, the event drew immediate attention and a rapid law enforcement response.
Officials have not yet released information regarding potential charges the 17-year-old may face, and the investigation remains active.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, police emphasized that no bystanders or tourists were injured, though the event has raised renewed concerns about public safety in high-traffic urban areas.
Authorities continue to investigate and are expected to release further details as the case develops.
