Tornado Warning Issued for West Central Jefferson County, FL, as Severe Storm Moves East

A dangerous severe weather situation is unfolding near Tallahassee as a tornado warning has been issued for parts of Jefferson County, placing communities on high alert amid the threat of a possible tornado and damaging storm conditions.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee issued the warning for west-central Jefferson County, effective during the late afternoon hours, after radar detected rotation within a powerful thunderstorm. The storm was located approximately 12 miles southwest of Monticello and moving east at around 25 mph.

Forecasters warned that the storm is capable of producing a tornado, with associated hazards including flying debris, structural damage to homes and buildings, and significant risk to vehicles and mobile homes. Large tree damage is also possible due to strong winds, while torrential rainfall may lead to flash flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Communities in the path of the storm—including CappsWacissaWacissa SpringsLamontWaukeenah, and Thomas City—have been specifically urged to take immediate precautions.

Residents are advised to seek shelter in a sturdy building, ideally in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows. Those outdoors, in vehicles, or in mobile homes are urged to move to safer shelter immediately, as these environments offer little protection during tornado conditions.

Authorities have also cautioned against driving through flooded roadways, as flash flooding can develop rapidly during intense storms. Even shallow water can pose serious risks to vehicles and individuals.

While the warning primarily covers rural areas, the broader Tallahassee region remains under close monitoring as storm systems continue moving through North Florida. Weather conditions may evolve quickly, and additional warnings could be issued if the storm strengthens or changes direction.

Emergency management officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to stay informed through official weather alerts and local updates. The situation remains active, and further information is expected as the storm progresses.
